Overview
My role included working collaboratively on creating websites and applications that internal employees could utilise. Specific markets (different countries where Vodafone operate) could also use the websites created to understand the standards required of them when they create their own prototypes. My day-to-day involved creating new features on a website, editing the CSS, ensuring that the code is efficient and manageable and communicating with my colleagues to understand what we could improve and how to go about it.
Skills
I developed my React, HTML, CSS and JavaScript skills significantly as they were the main tools I used in the year. I learnt TypeScript, NextJS, Tailwind CSS and the basics of React Native. I also explored Spring Boot, Swagger, Axios, and Postman, giving me an insight into backend and APIs. My last project gave me the exciting chance to delve into R, a language I had never encountered before. Though I wouldn't say I'm an expert in these tools, I definitely have gained a basic understanding of what they do and how to use them in implementation.
Responsibilities
I definitely was given responsibility in my placement, it was something that I enjoyed the most about it. The team that I was in recognised my potential and gave me tasks they knew I could do or will challenge me, assuring me that I can ask for help anytime. When I was able to complete a task, whether it be creating a new feature, page or editing the code, I felt satisfied knowing that I have developed my skills enough to do so.
Support & Guidance
Every step of the way I had someone there to help me. If I struggled with technical issues or personal issues, there was someone there who could and would help me. I came into placement afraid and nervous, thinking that I would be a burden to my colleagues but I soon came to realise that they liked when I asked questions and they were quick to help. I would have weekly catchups with a colleague simply so they could ensure I was okay and if I needed any help.
Culture
At Vodafone, the company culture and general atmosphere were truly outstanding. It was a dynamic and inclusive environment that fostered innovation and collaboration. The teams were supportive and approachable, making it easy to seek guidance and learn from experienced professionals. One of the standout features was their occasional spirit days, where they encouraged employees to take the day off to develop skills and take a much-needed mental break. I personally had the opportunity to engage in activities like mindful painting, Zumba dancing, and even completed a course on the introduction to machine learning during these days. This emphasis on personal growth and well-being made my experience at Vodafone incredibly positive, contributing significantly to my personal and professional growth.
Your Impressions
100%. I enjoyed every part of my placement and only wish to be back. The work, the environment, the flexibility, the opportunities provided. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I have. I believe that the ability to delve into whatever role you are curious about also added to this enjoyment. I did a 'stretch project' into the Employer Branding team where I was able to do tasks entirely different from what I usually did in my day-to-day.
Yes
The number one advice I would give is to be yourself during the online assessment. I know this is something that others may say as well but I can't emphasise it enough. To put it into perspective, I joked with my interviewer about how the logo, saying how I thought it was a teardrop and he informed me it was a speech mark (which obviously makes a lot more sense). In being myself, I was assured that I would secure a job in this placement.
