Overview
Completing corporate tax returns and sending queries to clients. Work involved both corporate and private clients, including partnerships, and well-known companies. Attended client meetings. Worked on projects with a Partner in the service line. Drafted emails, and communicated with senior members of the team.
Skills
Lots - I learned a lot about tax in general, as well as specific pieces of tax legislation that were applicable or were coming into force during the time of my placement. I also developed better communication skills, and the ability to adapt to new situations. A growth mindset was also key to success on the placement, including being resilient.
Responsibilities
Yes - from day one I was involved in meaningful work which a full-time analyst would be tasked with. I carried out different tasks throughout and was able to appreciate the importance of each task and see how they impacted the client at each stage.
Support & Guidance
I had a lot of support. I had a buddy who I could go to about anything, and also had a People Leader who was there to support throughout. There was also an SVS Champion who was also on hand for support whenever needed. I was also placed within a specific team whom I could go to for support or advice. I also worked alongside a Partner on various projects.
Culture
Very welcoming and supportive. Anyone was happy to have a chat or be asked questions. There was very much a culture of face-to-face conversations for most matters, including to get feedback from peers. There was also a clear effort to make us feel welcome and we were included in social events during our time at the office.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement - it was engaging, professional, and I felt included and supported all the time. The people were incredible and seemed to enjoy having us in the office - they made an effort to show us how things work and were always up for any questions.
Yes
Prepare for the online tests, and if you succeed at those, be yourself in the interview. My interview went very well (in my opinion) because it felt more like a conversation about my motivations and prospects than a test. That attitude, including having a resilient growth mindset will set you up well.
