Overview
Worked within the Assurance department completing a multitude of audit tasks. After initial training, immediately began working within active teams, involving active client work and direct contact with audit accounts. Supported senior staff members with extra tasks and completed additional training in free time. Also led a charity fundraiser with other Interns, for the EY foundation.
Skills
Became adept at using the EY specialist Excel tools, developed my communication and teamwork skills and learned what was required to balance workloads in order to meet impending deadlines.
Responsibilities
After our training, we began doing the same work as first and occasionally second years - essentially having the responsibility of people with months of experience. This was fantastic for development as an immediate immersion into the field meant we could acclimatise quickly to the demands of the audit world.
Support & Guidance
Training was thorough and useful. Every intern had a buddy, who was a junior staff member and helped them settle in and supported them with certain tasks. In addition, every intern had a counsellor who was a senior member of staff and was available for support and guidance throughout the entire process. On every team, I had someone advising me who I could go to if faced with a problem.
Culture
The Leeds office is smaller and as such felt incredibly friendly and welcoming. We immediately felt included and valued as members of the team, and it felt like our work was making a tangible difference to the team. Work-life balance was excellent and we were never expected to stay beyond our contracted hours.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at EY. The culture and atmosphere were fantastic and the opportunities for development for great. The work often felt quite monotone and basic which detracted from the overall enjoyment but seeing the positive direct consequences of the work somewhat made up for this.
Yes
Decide on your ideal location first, then explore what lines are available at that office. The work varies greatly from line to line so ensure you choose one which suits your skills and interests the most, as if you’re successful, grad scheme offers will be in the same line and office as your internship. Prepare well for the interviews as they can be quite daunting.
