Overview
Helping managers to run the operation either from the warehouse floor, or in the office in transport. This involved maintain, and trying to improve upon daily targets, managing a team of warehouse operatives/drivers, and completing various admin tasks.
Skills
My Communication and leadership skills were greatly improved upon. I also learnt more about incident investigation, conflict management/resolution and diversity and inclusion.
Responsibilities
The more I learnt, the more responsibilities I was given. Management of the team and helping to run the warehouse were probably 2 of the biggest responsibilities I handled during my placement.
Support & Guidance
Gist link you with a mentor and a placement buddy from the day you start. Along with your line manager and colleagues at work, you always feel you have someone to turn to no matter what the situation.
Culture
At my site in particular, there was a great sense of community, as many of the people there had worked in the depot for many years. The learning and development team also do an amazing job of building of strong culture of development among the placement, grads and degree apprentices.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed my placement, the core reason being the people I worked with. I can stress enough how wonderful the people at the Bristol depot were during my time there.
Yes
Utilise the connections with your mentor and placement buddy as much as you can. They are both very experienced in the industry and the placement buddies are made up of a group of graduates who have since rolled off the scheme. I would also suggest trying to visit as many sites in the network as possible, and see how different ways of managing the operation suits different workforces.
