Overview
Analysing samples such as blood, CSF and faeces. Delivering patient results via email or over the phone. Ensuring tests were run and locating missing or problem samples.
Skills
I’ve learned to use labratory automation, to troubleshoot collaboratively and individually, and time management.
Responsibilities
I was stationed on my own after sufficient training, in charge of ensuring patient samples were analysed correctly and that results were obtained.
Support & Guidance
Lots of training and assurance of who I could go to for advice.
Culture
Very friendly environment with people willing to discuss their career paths and give advice when asked.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed being in a role where responsibility over patients was involved, it made me believe I was helping people by ensuring fast delivery of patient results.
No
Be aware that the days can get monotonous and that a lot of the analysis isn’t manual, it’s automated. Despite that you can still learn about science and how tests are done and what they mean.
