Overview
On a daily basis, I would consult with my manager to get through day to day tasks. This would normally include systematically reviewing papers for an overall data extraction. There would be multiple projects at a time so much of my day would revolve around meetings and talks of next steps for projects.
Skills
I understood the true meaning of time management and making the most out of your day. At University I would fit in a couple of lectures and other bits, but now as I come back to my 3rd year, I am prepared for the work that the dissertation demands. By focusing and efficiently planning your time, your day ends up being far more productive, only being in real world industry would have achieved this.
Responsibilities
Yes, a lot. After a couple of weeks showcasing my skills, my manager allowed me to have a mini intern of my own which was great. I learn't how to manage my time whilst dedicating important bits to another. Although this person was my peer, I was able to learn how to have difficult conversations and still get tasks done efficiently.
Support & Guidance
I would say, a lot of the time, it was my manager providing tasks, and me delegating how long I wanted to spend on them. With this, if help was needed I would ask, but most of the time you must have been able to exercise your common sense and puzzle pieces together importantly.
Culture
It was really nice being surrounded by so many working women. It definitely pushed me to work further and understand more about the working life and culture. The atmosphere was mainly positive but as I was surrounded by researchers, everyone was working at 100 mph so although it was great to be a part of, it was stressful coming out of 2nd year and being thrown into working at this pace too.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement, not just for the experience, but I met some amazing individuals.
Yes
Don't be scared, you don't have to be the smartest person getting all A's. You need to prioritise common sense, and thinking on your feet. This world needs problem solvers not people who stick to the book.
