Overview
Due to a lack of resources in the department, my work was very varied. My roles involved taking meeting minutes, creating presentations on the economy for internal stakeholders and conducting research and analysis on various high profile topic areas.
Skills
The ability to create professional meeting minutes and presentations. The ability and know how of how to operate under time pressures and communicate clearly and effectiively with colleagues of various backgrounds and expertise.
Responsibilities
Due to the shortage of staff I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement year which was a very beneficial aspect of the placement year.
Support & Guidance
I would have weekly 1-2-1 sessions with my line manager and the support of my team alongside support and resources from the learning platform provided.
Culture
Working from home meant that I would attend the office once every month on average due to a 3 hour commute. The ONS is possibly the best organisation in the UK for flexible working and they are very accommodating and understanding of your personal circumstances.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year. Looking back I would have preferred attending the office more in person as I felt that I learned and took on more knowledge when this was the case. Overall, I would recommend the ONS and the wider civil service as a great place to apply to for a placement year.
Yes
Understand how to answer behavioural and competency questions in the way in which the civil service want you to answer them.
