    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Day to day opportunities involved: Shadowing Educational Psychologists in assessment, consultation and training. Running paired reading interventions Supporting Educational Psychologists with training of school staff. Attending Warwickshire Educational Psychology Service conferences or meetings. Conducting research such as literature searches, thematic analysis etc. Supporting service initiatives such as strategic groups.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently. Ability to use my own initiative and creativity. Ability to communicate effectively, in writing and verbally. Experience of interacting respectfully with both colleagues and members of the public (adults and children). Ability to organise self and files effectively. Time management skills – ability to work to deadlines, amend work schedules to reflect changing priorities. Reflective skills and develop coping strategies for self.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was happy with the opportunities I was offered. There were lots of times where I would share a responsibility with another placement student. I had the responsibility of leading an intervention. I had regular supervision with my supervisor to plan this and reflected every week on the intervention as well as the other tasks I was completing.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a lot of support during my placement. I had weekly or fortnightly supervision meetings with a Senior Educational Psychologist. I also received mental health and well-being training and safeguarding training. The service is supported by business support who were always available. Trainee and qualified Educational Psychologists were also happy and available to talk to for guidance.

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The service was very welcoming and inclusive. The team I was based in were friendly and understanding.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed my placement very much. I have been able to develop professionally and I have a greater understanding of Educational Psychology. There were many great opportunities which I embraced. I enjoyed working with Educational Psychologists to support children and young people, families and schools.
