Overview
On a day to day, I would come in the morning to a handover meeting, where the information about client visits from the previous day anf any other relevant information is shared with the team. After this it really varies daily, I may have a few admin based tasks and a patient visit in the afternoon. Or sometimes it is patient visits all day and then I would try and find time to complete some admin in between.
Skills
I would say yes, I learnt how much I don’t know. Other than this reflective skills. Also I learnt that it won’t hurt in any way to take initiative and try out new things even if it does not seem conventional and stick to it even if you think others might now like it or that it won’t work.
Responsibilities
It started off quite slow where I did not have too much to do. But as I learnt, more I was given opportunities where I could contribute more. So the more I learnt the more I took on, until I took on a bit too much, but that in itself was a learning curve. It helped me take on a steady workload in the longer run and I am a little bit better at scheduling now!
Support & Guidance
A lot. Everyone from my supervisor to the assistant psychologists, nurses and doctors were happy to help in any way. I dedicate this sentence to thank them!
Culture
We were like a big family, the work culture was moving. There was meaning and dedication behind the work that every single member of the team did.
Your Impressions
I loved it! I would recommend anyone who has an interest in psychology and therapy, with a want to work with people to try out a honorary assistant psychologist placement. I had a good experience, you might not. Both ways you learn.
Yes
Give it a go. May not be your cup of tea but you may come to love it. This way you will find out what you find meaningful and what doesn’t really click with you.
