    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I would manage the administration process of 'PeopleHR' a cloud based HR portal and ensure all records were up to date. I also assisted in organising the candidate management, interviews and selection activities whilst liaising with recruitment agencies where necessary. I had also assisted with the onboarding and company inductions and made sure all paperwork from new employees were organised and sent out in a timely manner. I also helped maintained the company benefit schemes.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • My time management in this role has been perfected as we had multiple project on-going during each month. Whilst there were new employees joining and inductions were taking place, I also had to schedule and plan interviews for the next job role available and there were time when we had to complete exit interviews during this stage of filling out new job roles. I also have improved on my verbal and written communication skills as I had to liase with many different departments and even external members like recruitment agencies.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was given a lot of responsibility as the HR team was only consisting of the HR manager, me and an Events and CSR officer who previously was the HR Manager. As the Events and CSR Officer was only in 2 days a week and one time my HR Manager had went to work in our Aberdeen location , I was left with full responsibility of ordering new technological equipment for the desk and IT set up as well as planning the induction and completing the onboarding process along (3 months in). I found this very difficult because I had no access to any payment cads, nor was I given a guide on the budget or type of equipment to purchase. This caused some delay and was not the best onboarding or that new employee but luckily they were very understanding.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • In the beginning (first 2 months) I was provided with lots of support and my manager was very helpful. However, when certain issues started to arises with the public transport, I started struggling with mental health issues and the advice presented wasn't very helpful which in turn made me decide to leave the company. Any issues regarding work was very well supported and all my questions were answered and my experience was very fulfilling.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • It was very nice. Everyone in different departments would get along quite nicely and even during the work events that were arranged for summer and Christmas, everyone was enjoying and getting along very well. There were some issues between certain departments looking down on others for their job role because which I found very unpleasant and I also didn't like the idea of how health conscious everyone was in a way that felt unhealthy.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed the whole experience of understanding what it is like to work in a corporate environment and learning the different ways people tend to do their work. I also got a better understanding of how to use outlook calander which is very helpful for time management. I do feel that if I was provided better support for my mental health I would have done better to last the full 12 months of the placement.

  • No

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Viper Innovations
  • I feel that if there are people with a background in Engineering then they will feel very supported and appreciated within the company. There were events held to show appreciation of the achievements of engineers which was amazing but any administrative job I find is hard to find a good work-life balance and one of my colleagues who I worked alongside daily tended to work on the weekends because there was so much to do and catch up on which I found very unhealthy.
