Overview
Conducting laboratory investigation. Performing maintenance of various analysers and equipment. Conducting both external and internal quality control. Adhering to standard operating procedures. Communicating with both colleagues and service users. Booking in samples to the Laboratory information management system.
Skills
Liquid handling skills. Laboratory skills- micropipetting. Multi-tasking. Working within a high pressured environment. Teamwork. Independent working. Time management. Communication.
Responsibilities
A lot. I was typically left to independently cover breaks and lunches in the haematology lab.There was high instance of staff sickness leading me to take on extra responsibility.
Support & Guidance
The placement tutor didn't bother to email or reply so I didn't get any support from the university. However my training officer and colleagues in the lab were extremely helpful in guiding me through the process.
Culture
Can be very stressful and high pressured due to lack of staff but all staff were friendly, helpful and offered advice.

Very much. I completed my IBMS generic portfolio which now allows me to advance quickly in this career.
