Overview
My main role was to develop a low light plasma diagnostic system for a prototype partical accelerator. My day to day included schematic and PCB design, embedded software coding in C/C++ using micro controllers. And doing tests on hardware that was developed and collaberating with physics colleges for their interpretation.
Skills
I greatly improved my PCB design and my embedded software skills, on the software side mainly using linux and coding for internet messaging protocols. And in terms of PCB I improved a lot on component knowledge and how to read datasheets more effectively to come up with hardware solutions
Responsibilities
Yes I was given some what large responsibility in terms of the design of the optical diagnostic and trusted to write and publish the paper in the IPAC journal. Along with present a paper on the topic at an international conference
Support & Guidance
I recived a lot more support at the start of my placement as I didnt know as much but as i grew into the role I found myself needing less help. But still available if I needed it
Culture
Atmosphere was very friendly and very helpful and understanding of my lack of knowledge due to being a student.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed my placement as what I worked on was very interesting and was given the freedom to study aspects I found interesting and come up with novel solutions myself
Yes
Just put yourself out there as much as possible. State if you have done personal projects and what your interests are. And do your research into the company before doing interviews
