Overview
I screened patients and lists for specific studies on a day-to-day basis. From this I would then communicate with patients and staff, in person and via telephone. I carried out the consenting and recruitment process independently. Data entry would be completed following this which also involved extracting data from the electronic patient records. Throughout the week, tasks varied depending on which studies I worked on or how many patients were admitted. On some occasions I processed samples in the Biomedicine Laboratory including blood samples and CSF samples.
Skills
Yes, I developed communication skills and people skills as I was regularly speaking to patients, families, staff and colleagues. Presentation skills as I presented to the teams I worked with and covered Technology Tools that would be beneficial to research roles. In terms of time management, I had to handle multiple studies and attend time-sensitive recruits, and meetings. I developed my empathetic skills, as talking to patients who were in a vulnerable state meant I showed respect and listened to patients and their family.
Responsibilities
Yes, I felt a real sense of responsibility and a valued member of the team. My work was valued and when I reached a milestone, I was recognised for my work. I helped the teams reach the monthly targets and I found working rewarding. I was the second lead for two studies, where I would be part of catch ups and would also help train new members of staff who were going to work on studies.
Support & Guidance
I was given and undertook necessary training and was supported by staff and was able to observe the work done prior to independently doing so. My managers were highly supportive and allowed me to gain the most out of my placement. Anytime I had a question or asked to observe and learn about a particular area of research, I was given support and also signposted to where I could learn more. I had monthly 1:1 meetings where my manager and I discussed my development, which I found really helpful and in order to set myself goals.
Culture
The environment was a positive environment, and staff were warm and friendly. We had meetings with the whole team where we would all come together and catch up on studies and well as having buffet lunch and trying homecooked foods, which was nice to try new foods and discuss this. Staff were open and the atmosphere was good both in the workplace and outside such as social work do’s. I was also able to make good friends which I was really appreciative of.
Your Impressions
I highly enjoyed my placement, and gained so much experience which I will be able to use in the future. I have met so many people during the 12 months. This placement has given me a good idea of possible future plans such as further studies and career as I was able to get a good insight into the world of research. Working full-time gave me a good idea of working within a company for a long duration.
