Overview
My role included ad-hoc tasks like answering emails and messages from employees with questions about events, and communicating with suppliers and event planners to get everything arranged for company events. I also sourced and wrote content for five social media platforms, and kept the website content up to date with blogs written by employees. I often had events to go and oversee and check were running smoothly.
Skills
I attended many training courses that were offered to me during my time there, for example Excel practice, time management, resilience, understanding of financial markets and learning how to use AI (ChatGPT). I also gained confidence in my ability to work in a fast paced environment, and improved my creative writing skills from writing content for company communications and social media posts.
Responsibilities
I was given lots of responsibility, for example managing all five social media platforms and posting content several times per day, and planning future posts. Also I was responsible for organising high profile meetings and events for higher management, e.g. the CEO. I was responsible for running external events for 100+ people on my own.
Support & Guidance
I was allocated a mentor from my team who acted as a stepping stone between me and my line manager. They were less busy so could take on my queries and I could ask them questions at all hours of the day. However, the support very much depended on my mentor's effort. When I was paired with someone who didn't understand my workload, this support diminished greatly.
Culture
As a tech firm, the company culture is centered around an interest in tech. Overall, it's a positive culture that encourages people to communicate with each other. People are generally helpful and chatty. However, I think improvements could be made to improve diversity.
Your Impressions
Personally, G-Research was not the company for me. I didn't find interest in my workload and didn't find many people to connect with in my team. I did not enjoy my placement, but I also don't regret my time there because I learnt so much about myself, my boundaries and my standards for my next role.
