Overview
My role is as an analyst. Often this requires communication with both policy teams and external stakeholders in order to deliver my analysis as well as the policy itself. We use a lot of excel in order to analyse patterns in data. We’re also required to give plenty of presentations where we translate technical analysis into easy to follow language.
Skills
Presentation skills have definitely been developed a lot and along with that so have communication skills. Working in a large government department you are constantly talking to colleagues or external stakeholders and speaking to them in a professional manner is something you learn quickly.
Responsibilities
I was given plenty of responsibility being placed as a lead analyst for a number of projects meaning I was often the first port of call whenever analysis was needed or questions were raised on projects under my scope. I also worked on large fiscal events such as the spring budget
Support & Guidance
Plenty of support my entire team were very helpful and always there if I needed any sort of support however silly I may have thought it was they were always happy to gelp
Culture
Good company culture a lot of young people meaning there were plenty of people like myself but also a good interconnectedness between people of all ages as we all enjoyed one another’s company at work and at socials
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement I met so many lovely people and really felt as though I was able to develop socially and professionally. If there were ever any skills or specific pieces of work I wanted to get involved it I would only have to ask my manager and more often than not I could be involved
Yes
Get involved as much as you can and don’t be afraid to initiate things with colleagues. Be yourself so many people fall into the trap of trying to tick boxes especially in interviews be yourself have a genuine conversation with the interviewer because at the end of the day they are trying to gauge whether they would want to work with you
