Overview
Flexible work from home and the office. Working with people across different offices via teams and also within the office based team to provide advisory tax support to clients and tax return preparation (which is great for building knowledge of tax).
Skills
Learnt how to use accounting software and develop my communication skills. Develop my financial literacy and learning how to correspond with clients. Learnt how to file return and a deeper understanding of how tax is applied and how this changes due to residency position.
Responsibilities
Yes, originally you may feel scared if you're doing a placement year and have never worked for an accounting firm before. But the support available is vast and a few weeks in you'll just log on and get on with your work as if you've been there for a while already. If you ever need support there's always someone available to ask.
Support & Guidance
A lot, Weekly meetings with my manager who really looked out for me. And also office chit chats with my colleague who was closer to me in seniority which meant you feel more comfortable asking questions.
Culture
It's nice, each team sits in their own little section but the overall office and people there are nice. Everyone's just doing their own thing and even if you're in a separate team, they still look out for new joiners.
Your Impressions
If I had the chance to redo my placement year I would choose Mazars and specialist tax again. I've learnt more about tax and accounting in my short time here than 2 years at university. The culture of the firm and support adds to this, you're always going to have someone to talk to if you're finding stuff difficult and just in general everyone in the office is nice so it's just a good place to work.
Yes
Look into the sector you're applying to and specifically the qualification, it may differ from what you want to do but if you discuss this before applying you'll be able to change the qualification/ sector as required. Also, go on linked in and speak to graduates already within the firm as they know what it's like to be a grad and work in specific sectors so they're the best people to ask.
