Overview
Mostly office work, with some workshop related disassembly or strip-downs of parts and shipping of components to suppliers. Receiving feedback from suppliers, and updating the warranty database to reflect the percentages of a wider claims list. Taking the monthly failures for specific customers and presenting them to the higher business representatives to give them an understanding of the failure rate and severity. Have to be on the lookout for new failures that occur on vehicles in service, and investigate new failures, discussing potential impact on customers.
Skills
I have certainly learned new skills and invested time in developing other skills. I have developed my skills of in-person collaboration, while learning how to collaborate virtually. My Microsoft Office skills have also been greatly improved, especially in excel. I have learned how to perform certain functions which are imperative to my role. New skills include international shipping and tracking, presentation skills to management, and maintaining a diverse workload with multiple responsibilities running alongside each other.
Responsibilities
I was given a good amount of responsibility during this internship that was fair to give to a placement student. the roles I was designated were of an acceptable difficulty with good timescales. The workload was fair with targets clearly set out and helped by my manager and mentor. I was able to negotiate to take on responsibilities that i was interested in, and dedicate more time to interesting jobs outside of the standard work description.
Support & Guidance
I have received a very good standard of guidance and i felt like I was fully supported at all times. Cummins offer a great mentor system for me in the Service team, and can report to both my mentor and manager for different issues. I also was given the opportunity to join the wider engineering monthly meetings, which offered more support. The HR is always open and ready to deal with any queries as and when they occur.
Culture
The general culture here at Cummins is fantastic. Most people are extremely friendly and will do their best to either solve the problem you have or guide you to the correct individual who can solve your problem. The overall culture is very welcoming and supportive of you and your talents, and will try their best to incorporate you into your role in a way that suits you best. the working hours for office staff are flexible and hybrid, with only a 20% minimum time on office. This gives you great flexibility, allowing everyone to perform ideally.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement to a large extent. my line manager gave me the opportunity to work for one day a week in another department, which I was very thankful for, as it is a department that I would have wanted to work for in the future. The service work is a little repetitive, and I don't often see the fruits of my labours, which can be difficult. I am more interested in being involved earlier in the product development life cycle, so I can't say I enjoyed the placement 100%, but that reflects on my fit for the position, not on Cummins as a whole.
Yes
I would say that your soft, personal skills are very important when applying here, as well as past experience. I would encourage prospective placements to reflect on the job description before applying, making sure you are comfortable with what you may find yourself doing on a day-to-day basis. You are also part of a very large company, which has both benefits and downsides. You are a very small cog in a large machine, so may progress slower in Cummins than you might do elsewhere. However, I would say the job security is good and the compensation is certainly better than others in the surrounding area.
