Overview
Varies day to day, could be working on data manipulation tasks, could be updating certifications, could be in meetings for most of the day so not have time to do much work independently. Due to the nature of the work, there will always be new certifications and policies introduced, making the work very consistent. Talk to people through teams when working from home, and a lot of face to face when in the office.
Skills
- Data analysis, using software like excel, power bi - Handling large data sets - Presenting skills - Lots of problem solving practice, and subsequently patience improvements - Business communication and etiquette - Improved idea of how a business is run/interacting with other departments and functions
Responsibilities
A little bit, however this came from projects I found for myself. The work is quite complex and delicate, so it is understandable that a placement student wasn't left to their own devises when navigating through the workload. However, I was given responsibility for the work I produced, improving my attention to detail.
Support & Guidance
A lot of support and guidance from everyone I worked with. The entire team were very easy to talk to, and I felt completely comfortable to speak out at times when I didn't have enough workload, or I was struggling with a piece of work I had been given.
Culture
It is a great atmosphere and culture at Cummins. Everyone is very friendly and responsive. The offering of volunteering in the local community, experiences in other departments, and the cross over with other sections of the business make the atmosphere at Cummins feel inclusive and inviting for any new joiner at the company. They are transparent from the top of the company down.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement 75% of the time. This is in part due to the time I joined the team I was in, but also due to the placement being slightly different to what had been advertised online. So the other 25% can be accounted for by other factors that, on the most part, were out of anyone's control
Yes
Be sure of the department you want to join into, as a company Cummins is very relaxed about trying other functions. Get involved with as many communities within Cummins Utilise the office space as much as possible, as its a fantastic space to work in
