Overview
The event gave an introduction to Amazon and what they do, and it also consisted of a hackathon. This hackathon consisted of 6 complex coding challenges on HackerRank, and it was definitely fun and challenging, I was very humbled at how little I actually know! We also got to hear from Amazon Software Engineers and were given an insight into the work they do at Amazon.
Skills
I have definitely picked up some extra coding skills including String manipulation and working with arrays and other data structures.
Business Insight
The event itself was led by people who worked in Marketing at Amazon, so we heard a bit about what they do and we also heard from a Product Manager who worked specifically on Prime Video. We also heard from software engineers who worked within different subsidiaries of Amazon, including AWS, Prime Video and Alexa Shopping. Hearing from them definitely helped me understand the potential roles available at Amazon and how the journey they took to get to where they are today.
Culture
The general atmosphere felt very fun and inclusive. The hackathon itself was very intense but I did have loads of fun and it got my brain working. Outside of the hackathon, it was also really nice as it was great to hear from other women working in male-dominated fields and it just felt very relatable.
Your Impressions
The insight was very enjoyable, in particular the hackathon. The competition between other women in computer science was a good experience and helped me develop some coding skills, as well as identify what I needed to work on in regards to coding skills.
Yes
Since it was just a CV and online application, I felt that you really needed to highlight which programming skills you're familiar with, and also to make sure you definitely are a woman in computer science or computer engineering.
