The Role
The placement was enjoyable due to the challenges faced and the social aspect, although it was difficult initially to enjoy the early starts.
I felt valued by my colleagues as they treated me as a serious member of the team, and provided me with responsibilites.
My manager was fantastic in helping me settle in, and was very approachable when I had any issues or questions. This made the placement a lot more enjoyable and comfortable.
I was kept busy enough on most days, but there would be some periods where work would be lacking and I would have to sought out work to keep myself busy.
I was given a fair degree of responsibility within my role, which made my placement feel important and gave me greater job satisfaction.
I feel I have learnt valuable skills during my placement, which can be transferred to my degree studies and my future career.
The Company
The atmosphere was generally quiet and serious, although everyone is free to talk to each other and there was occassional banter displayed.
The work placement was very well set up, and you could tell that Vauxhall had been running their placement scheme for several years.
I feel that we were given sufficient training in Excel and Powerpoint, although it was only brief training.
The general consensus is that Vauxhall's graduate scheme is extremely difficult to get into, and it seems that the company is currently more interested in personnel reductions rather than growth due to the difficult economic climate.
The Culture
There was a good social scene, with over 100 placement students and events/nights out being organised on a regular basis.
Although Luton is relatively cheap compared to other towns in the area (e.g. St Albans, Harpenden), it is still expensive for someone who has come from a University in the north of England.
The nightlife in Luton is appalling, however the transport links to London mean that you can easily have a good night somewhere else!
There were opportunities to get involved in external activities, however these were not really provided by work and were something you would have to seek for yourself.
