Overview
Day 1 provided an immersive introduction to the firm, with ample opportunities to interact and ask questions to various representatives of the firm. Through discussions and participation in the Mock Litigation Exercise, I gained a greater understanding of the nature of the work and what personal progression I can make with the firm. I really enjoyed the vibrant culture at the firm. Day 2 focused on the firm's progression and evolution over the years and how there is greater understanding of the people at the firm and this has led to the empowerment of individuals, especially through the various People Networks. There was a great session on personal branding and it emphasised our ability to grow, adapt, learn and embrace new skills in our professional journeys. Charles Cook's closing keynote was particularly engaging and I gained so much insight. Charles created such a positive and encouraging environment to close the event.
Skills
Throughout this insight programme, I have developed my existing skill of proactivity. This programme provided me with the opportunity to meet so many new people, not only representatives from the firm, but also peers on the cohort. My proactive nature, led me to go up to new people and initiate conversations and hear about their insights on the firm. This programme really showed the importance of seeking out new opportunities, and this was really beneficial.
Business Insight
Hearing from representatives from all levels of seniority, ranging from partners, to trainees really developed my understanding of the roles that I would do at different stages of my career. This provided me with greater insight into the skills needed at all stages of my professional journey. Hearing about the challenges, the highlights and why they chose to qualify into a certain practice area was really insightful. Also, I enjoyed hearing from trainees who were more recently in a student position, so can authentically describe their day as a trainee and relate more to student's current mindsets.
Culture
The culture at the firm was really positive. Everyone was willing to really be honest and express their reasons for staying with the firm. Also, learning about the firm's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion really stood out to me. As someone from a socially mobile background, it is inspiring to hear about how employees are able to bring their full-selves to work and connect with similar people as well as open-minded people who can appreciate your experiences and how it can add value. DLA Piper demonstrated that they appreciate diversity of thought and value the fact that diverse experiences bring diverse solutions. This stood out to me.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the insight scheme, so I will be applying for the summer internship for 2025. I really liked the culture at the firm, the people, and graduate recruitment. It was a really supportive environment, and I can see the benefit that this would have on me as a trainee. I am exited to see my progression with the firm. To improve this insight scheme even further, I would suggest more bespoke tips on the application process, fore example in regards to the video interview, or the assessment centre, as this was quite a general overview.
