Overview
The Insight Programme consisted of presentations from a range a people within DLA Piper. This included insights into DLA Piper's core practice areas and what a day in the life looks like as a trainee. I was also exposed to additional areas of the firm, including pro bono, sustainability and diversity and inclusion. Overall, the firm was very insightful and clarified what a career as a commercial lawyer will look like.
Skills
-Networking skills: The opportunity to meet a range of people (both within DLA Piper and other students) allowed me to make meaningful connections. -Personal branding: Following a session with external speakers on personal branding, I feel more aware of the skills that I have and what makes me stand out from the crowd. This will be crucial in succeeding in my video interview. -Career passion: I left feeling highly motivated and excited for a career in law.
Business Insight
It was an invaluable experience to learn about how DLA operates on such a global scale and uses collaboration across offices all over the world in order to create the best possible outcomes for clients. I was also engaged through the wider impact of the business in terms of their contribution to making a better world, through sustainability, diversity and pro bono work. I am now able to recognise DLA Pipers ability to create impactful outcomes through the work they do.
Culture
Upon my arrival at the firm, I was immediately made to feel welcome from the lovely Early Careers Team who went above and beyond throughout the whole programme. After hearing from a range of people within DLA Piper, there was a consistent theme of the firms collaborative culture. I was particularly drawn to the 'One UK' approach that the firms operates, allowing teams to collaborate across offices all across the world to create the best possible outcomes for clients. In addition to this, it is clear that the firm genuinely cares about both its employees (through the six people networks) and making a positive difference in the wider community, evidenced through the incredible pro bono projects, particularly New Perimeter.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed the Insight Programme and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to attend it. Not only did the programme confirm that I wish to pursue a career as a commercial solicitor, it also established that DLA Piper is the place in which I feel I will have the most positive experience in doing so. The Insight Programme supplied me with a deep understanding of the work of a commercial solicitor, and significantly strengthened my commercial awareness. In addition to this, the opportunities to network and connect with like-minded individuals was delightful.
Yes
My advice to anyone applying for DLA Piper would be to research the firm before submitting an application and make sure that their values align with your own. If you wish to work in a firm with a collaborative and inclusive culture, who support the wider community, then DLA Piper will likely be the firm for you!
