Overview
Students had the ability to interact with leaders in business areas, including Global Banking, Global Markets, Asset & Wealth Management, Research, and Tech. The programme included overviews of divisions, panel events, trading and M&A simulations from AmplifyMe, as well as networking opportunities.
Skills
Throughout the duration of the programme, the importance of networking was heavily emphasised and students had plenty of opportunities to hone in on that skill. I got more comfortable with elevator pitches, getting to know professionals in packed settings, and asking meaningful questions. Some other skills developed include negotiation, which was trained during a Negotiation group activity. Active listening and technical skills were developed throughout the week with presentations and trading / M&A simulations by AmplifyMe.
Business Insight
What most helped my understanding was the opportunity to network with representatives from each division - I got to ask about their day-to-day responsibilities and what made them choose one area over the other. Although prior to the programme I was familiar with the different roles and divisions in banks, my knowledge came from reading and participating in societies, but rarely from actual employees. This help me put things into perspective and gave me further motivation to pursue my areas of interest.
Culture
People are there to help you achieve your best potential - from the HR team, industry leaders, to the other students selected, everyone demonstrated proactivity, an involved attitude, and always willing to help out. I was never afraid to ask a question and saw that although there is seniority in the workplace, there is strong collaboration between all positions.
Your Impressions
The insight exceeded my expectations, as the programme was jam packed with learning activities and opportunity to interact with leaders in industry. For next year, to gain an even deeper understanding of different roles, I suggest giving students the opportunity to shadow employees in different divisions and getting the chance ti see the trading floor.
Yes
Apply early - this demonstrates proactivity and gives you a higher chance, as the programme is rolling. Speak to people - join your university societes and meet people who have done or are currently applying to spring weeks. If you find someone that participated in UBS’ programmes - even better! Go on a Linkedin search for employees or students in divisions that interest you and kindly ask them to have a chat with you. Soak it all in - if you get the chance to come to UBS, come with an open mind, ready to speak to all divisions and ready to learn.
