The Role
There was times throughout my placement where I was really really busy and other times where I felt I had nothing to do. However working through both phases of work makes you come out stronger and learn what to do in a similar situation in the future.
It takes a while to build up the trust like in every job but you are a part of the team and not treated differently to any colleague here.
My team are very mobile and don't sit together as a team, however my manager made sure we had weekly meetings to see my progress and make sure I was happy and learning at all times.
I had to find a lot of the work for my self but this helped my confidence and satisfaction in the long run.
This also varied, for some projects I owned them and had a large responsibility with deadlines that had to be met, however it was very hard as to make these deadlines a lot of the stuff was out of my control but in the long run it is appreciated and people trust you more.
I have learnt a different way of working in a team in which I wasn't comfortable with before, this will help me in Uni assignments. Also working with difficult team members and a variety of different projects and skills like time keeping and organisation are all things I can take forward.
The Company
It depends who you sit with and where you sit, for the second half of the year I sat with friends and it was a much happier environment.
There are lots of complications on how your year will count, so if you get skipped any stages and your Personal Mentors, although very nice you don't see them enough and they determine a lot of what happens in your future at IBM.
I was trained in IBM specific tools and programmes but nothing much else that I could take to another firm.
Financial Bonus
Working from home
Before I came here they made them sound really good, but you don't stand a huge chance above external candidates even if you have worked here for a year which is disappointing.
The Culture
I lived with other interns and had a good group of friends but being in London a lot of people lived at home and we struggled to arrange socials as everyone was always so busy!
Being in central London housing and socialising is obviously quite expensive but we took advantage of thinks like Happy Hour and working from home to save money.
Good, it's central London.
Give Back is a huge thing here, you can do things outside of your daily job which your managers are happy for you to do. These are volunteering such as going into schools to run workshops, doing 'Big CV' interviews at schools, they are all interesting and you learn a lot!
