The Role
The staff are great, the opportunities are endless and you just cannot believe the working facilities - everything from restaurants, to on-site gyms and doctors surgeries.
I was given a great deal of responsibility and felt like a full time employee, rather than a student Intern.
I wasn't just supported - I was pushed, and pushed further by my manager. They really want the best for you - so share your interests and ambitions - and they'll put you on the right track.
There is always something to do - ways in which you can improve your work, network in the business, or just go to play pool or Xbox with friends to cool off. It's the ideal work/life balance.
I had so much control from the start - it was a little intimidating. However, as you realise how much you're really responsible for, you just want to step up to the plate and show everyone what you're made of. You get the recognition you deserve for 'running the show' too!
The placement goes above and beyond University. This is no offence to my particular institution - but I gained life skills as well as business acumen. Placements are definitely the way forward if you're looking to develop your skills at University.
The Company
When you have a huge diversity of experiences all around you, as well as the latest technology in your normal working day - office life doesn't seem dull even for a second.
The University Staffing team at Microsoft were really well organised and faultless in their approach to organising the placement scheme for Interns. From stretch projects, to Intern community support - all bases were covered. You never seemed to be in a confused environment - which was INCREBILY nerve settling.
I am really keen on training in a corporate sense, but I had never even anticipated how many training and development opportunities there would be at Microsoft. It was great to get involved in everything from technical exams to first aid certificated and fire marshal training.

The Microsoft MACH scheme looks like an unbelievable opportunity and something that I'm really keen on following up.
The Culture
The Intern community had over 100 of us for the year and the it was really great not only to see everyone coming together and supporting one another at work but also outside of work in the social surroundings
Reading was very good value for what you were getting but London was obviously fairly steep. Both were fine if you could budget, as the Microsoft salary helped to cover it.
It was good because of the community but often involved heading to London for the bigger nights out.
This was ridiculous and you could easily spend all of your time devoting yourself to external opportunities.
