Overview
The insight week consisted of classroom based sessions and a tour of the office to give us an overall overview of Investment Banking as well as the different divisions at Nomura. We also had CV/Linkedin and soft skills workshops that were really useful for our personal development. The days were 9 to 5 with 2 breaks most were networking lunches where we got to ask questions directly to the employees and network with them.
Skills
One of the skills that l’ve learnt throughout the programme is how to analyse case studies that are heavily qualitative and quantitative. As a University student you always get guidance on what to expect on similar case studies but at work everything can be unexpected and you have to learn how to analyse carefully and choose the right data to present to potential client and being able to be knowledgeable is very important in those cases.
Business Insight
One thing that was done really well was introducing us to employees in different divisions and not just Investment banking. They were also all at different levels from student on placements to Managing directors. They all introduced themselves with what they do and how they got to where they are, they also gave us a glimpse on what to expect in those roles and which skills they are looking for to succeed within them
Culture
Everyone was very proud talking about Nomura overall, they have mentioned how the atmosphere is very flexible, welcoming and understanding of all differences. One thing hat really stood out was the support systems in place for different backgrounds and available to everyone at different levels at the office. Very inclusive
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it a lot, it was very insightful and l took away a lot of knowledge that l know it will be useful in the future. I think one thing that really stood out to me was the structure of the programme, each day helped build up the next one and l was able to use all the lessons learnt for the final day to present. There is a lot of things that l’ve learnt that l wasn’t aware of before.
Yes
Be yourself and make sure you have a bit of knowledge before about the industry before applying because if it doesn’t interest you then you might not find yourself comfortable within the environment. They are definitely looking for people with a lot of curiosity coming in with knowledge and built up questions to develop themselves. The application process was not as intense but l do say that the interview is trying to see if you would be suitable for the role and the company as a whole.
