Overview
I would attend a lot of trainee meetings, as well as listening in on client calls, undertaking legal research and amending legal documents.
Skills
I’ve really developed my presentation skills. I did two presentations while I was there and I could see how my confidence was building with public speaking between them. I also developed my legal research skills, and for the first time helped to amend a legal document, so gained a skill of drafting and amendment.
Business Insight
While working in my team I was exposed to all sorts of people working in different roles. I made good friends with some of the solicitor apprentices and it was interesting to learn about their career progression, and how that programme works. From a business perspective, I was able to see how a partner works out how much to bill a client, while considering who our competitors are, which was really beneficial.
Culture
This sounds cliché, but I have never worked in a firm or indeed a workplace with as nice of a culture as Stephenson Harwood. Everyone is welcoming and friendly, and are willing to lend a hand, and this didn’t just apply to me who was there for two weeks. But to partners, associates and trainees.
Your Impressions
I loved the insight, in fact, leaving the office on Friday was quite sad (and I had only been there two weeks!) Leaving the insight I have not only gained knowledge and experience, but lasting professional connections and friends :)
Yes
To be yourself! I thought that I would be expected to hide who I was, but the firm is so inclusive and celebratory of diversity, I had no problem expressing my true self, which made my time at the office even better.
