Overview
I support the design team in creating plans and drawings for highways, utilising AutoCAD software to help in the design process. I help in the preparation of project documentation, including technical reports and design specification. I work alongside project managers to help coordinate project deadlines. I make sure health and safety is compliant during site visits and in the office. I take part in project meetings. I take part in training sessions and workshops.
Skills
I have learned technical skills as I have first hand experience working with civil engineers using engineering tools and software. I have developed an understanding of how to plan and monitor projects including time management, budgeting and resource allocation. I have improved on my communication immensely as I am talking to different people daily. I have learnt to identify issues on and solve them wisely when I am met with a difficult encounter.
Responsibilities
I was not given too much responsibility during my placement. I am the grade representative of my cohort in the Office Local Engagement Team which was some responsibility. On projects, I have only had one project that I was given the task of completing the Traffic signs package for a client, but I do not count it as a big responsibility.
Support & Guidance
- My line manager has been very attentive and supportive whenever I have had any issues, - The resource manager has also been helpful in mentioning my name when I have been short on work - ECP wellbeing reach out call - offered me advice and guidance on some things I was concerned about - People in the office who I have talked to about my interests and them offering to connect me to the right people - My colleagues in the Model team have been supportive when I am out of work and finding me tasks to do that contribute to my learning - My buddy has been a great help whenever I need any advice or just for a chat - The office managers have been a huge support when I need anything and are very friendly and always up for a chat
Culture
It was a very good, supportive, enjoyable atmosphere at work, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far. The company are very inclusive of everyones needs and I have felt more than welcomed since my first day. There are a variety of events and opportunities going all the time which I absolutely love about Mott MacDonald.
Your Impressions
I have thoroughly enjoyed it, was a big change for me especially moving to a different country miles away from home. I have gained so many new skills, using new softwares, exploring different teams and what they do, confirming what type of work has my interests and what does not. I would 100% recommend to a friend, it is a really good opportunity that I am so grateful to have been accepted to do. Very beneficial to learn how the working environment is like and what I will be coming back to. It was scary, but very good change that I needed, I became much more independent, grew in confidence by talking to people more.
Yes
I would definitely recommend it, as I know have a rough idea of what I would be coming back to and what type of work I enjoy. There is a good social culture, many things to join and be apart of. Everyone I have met is always happy to go the extra mile to help me and I am so grateful for that.
