Overview
My position involves using system study applications along with performing calculations to analyse the behaviours of new and/or old components within an electrical network. Some of the specific studies include load flow studies (to analyse the adequacy of plant rating), short-circuit studies (to determine the minimum current needed to maintain safe current flow without the event of circuit faults and outages) and protection coordination studies (to recommend settings and the type of protective devices within the network). All studies are done so that Mott MacDonald can recommend the conditions and settings that a network must run within in order to achieve peak functionality, safety and sustainability.
Skills
New skills: - ETAP, PTW, IPSA (system study software) - Performing calculations within Excel to better understand mathematical formulas -Developed stronger knowledge of electrical component functionality and concepts -Built stronger team communication both in-person and over-call -Picked up improved vocabulary in terms of discussing electrical networks to convey ideas to a better standard - Progressed in report writing through developing various project deliverables in Microsoft Word -Learned from a diverse team of skilled engineers which in turn, allowed me to excel in my listening skills -Developed a further understanding of Mott's future goals on a global scale
Responsibilities
Yes. During my time at Mott MacDonald I have been given the great opportunity of working on various projects for different sectors of the company. One of these sectors includes the defence department, for which I was performing studies on a system for the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE). Before I could begin work on the project I had to gain a high-level security clearance which will be beneficial for future career prospects when working on government-official engineering projects. I was given a substantial amount help and advice at the beginning of my placement which now means I am able to work on projects individually with confidence.
Support & Guidance
My PSA team have been especially helpful during my time at the company. I am comfortable in terms of asking anyone with queries surrounding project development, report writing and developing skills within the system studies software. All questions I've had or challenges I have faced within projects have always been met with support and detailed responses which has been the main factor of how I have been able to develop a great deal of skills that are essential as an engineer.
Culture
The company office consists of friendly, hardworking people who are welcoming and supportive of new members. The office is a calm environment with comfortable and spacious working areas where you can work consistently throughout the day whilst also having pleasant general chat with colleagues. After almost completing my placement, it is clear that the company always looks out for its employers through giving them good facilities within the office and organising external events for people to have a break.
Your Impressions
I have greatly enjoyed my placement in terms of both personal and academic development. I feel like my job role has surpassed my expectations in terms of picking up skills and the type of work that I would be doing. I have definitely developed an increased interest in electrical engineering since joining the company as being given the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects has opened opportunities for future job prospects and I now look forward to returning to this line of work in the future.
