Overview
I work in the Water team specifically dealing with drainage. For projects on HS2 I am a BIM Technician which involves editing and creating plan, section and detail drawings. It also includes creating models. I make Flood Risk Assessments as well as model drainage systems. This all involves using software's such as OpenRoads, Civil 3D, MicroDrainage and Microsoft Word and Excel.
Skills
I have learnt new software skills such as OpenRoads and MicroDrainage and developed my skills in Civil 3D. I have developed my teamworking skills having to liaise with different members of my team or other members of Mott MacDonald to get tasks done. I have also developed my organisation skills, learning how to order and prioritise multiple tasks depending on the deadline. I have developed my communication skills having to present weekly my progress on projects I was working on.
Responsibilities
Yes. As a BIM Technician I was responsible for producing drawings for HS2 and getting them through BIM checks and approvals on time.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance during my placement. I was able to speak to any of my team members if I had a questions or was unsure about how to go about a certain task.
Culture
The company atmosphere is lively, there are always people in the office and there a lot of activities to take part in during the day. The members of the company are friendly.
Your Impressions
I have enjoyed my placement. I decided to go on a placement to understand what aspects of Civil Engineering I was interested in and wanted to pursue in the future and I believe this placement has set me in the right direction. I have also learnt a lot of new skills that have prepared me to enter the industry after I graduate.
