Overview
I experienced two different teams across the two weeks. During each week you will sit with a supervisor in their office and be assigned a trainee buddy within the same team. Your supervisor, and potentially others in the team, will get you involved with their work where possible; for example, legal research tasks and due diligence. There were also opportunities to join meetings for some very exciting matters in the news!

Business Insight
Supervisors and trainee buddies were very engaging and prepared to put time aside to speak in detail about their work and careers, despite their own busy schedules. This provided great opportunities to learn about very specialised areas of legal practice and about the way in which their careers have grown at the firm, and the support available. Alongside this were a significant number of talks about the firm's offerings, including by very senior individuals.
Culture
Clearly a firm full of hardworking and capable individuals, including the lawyers and all of the support staff, with a culture of excellence. Despite this high standard of work being achieved there was a genuinely warm atmosphere, not just represented by the way I was treated as a student considering a career there, but by the way current employees interacted with each other. Office doors were open and people were comfortable coming in for chats.
Your Impressions
Thoroughly enjoyed. My experience at the firm confirmed everything my research had indicated: particularly about the quality of work on offer and the positive culture. Experienced partners, even the CEO, made themselves available to meet with and talk at lengths with us, in groups and individually, illustrating the value put on the vacation scheme students during our two weeks.
Yes
Have a genuine understanding of what the firm does and how it is distinguished from its competitors. Not only will this inform your understanding of which firm will suit you best - and City commercial law firms do vary A LOT - but you will be in a better position to demonstrate to those you meet on the scheme why you want to join HSF, should this be the firm you decide suits your career goals.
