Overview
During the week, I conducted tasks for my supervisor and trainee buddy within my assigned practice area. I also prepared for an assessed group presentation throughout the week. The presentation was given on the last day. Throughout the week, there were focus on sessions which gave insights into a wide range of the firm's practice areas. Further, we were encouraged to organise 1-to-1 discussions with people across the firm.
Skills
My analytical skills were developed, in particular through having to quickly grasp complex information to undertake different tasks within a completely new practice area.
Business Insight
My understanding of the firm's wide range of practice areas was improved through the focus on sessions. Through discussions with my trainee buddy, I was able to better understand the typical tasks and responsibilities expected of a trainees. Speaking to different members of my team, people across the firm and my supervisor, I learnt about how the firm helps solicitors navigate their careers.
Culture
The culture was warm and welcoming. Everyone seemed proud that they worked at Taylor Wessing. There was a strong sense that everyone at the firm is very down to earth and easy to talk to. Trainees emphasised that they felt well supported and that the smaller cohort enabled them to be a tight knit group. Trainees higlighted the opportunties to really make an impact through the firm's CSR activities such as pro bono work.
Your Impressions
It was a great experience. In particular, I enjoyed learning about practice areas that I had not intially considered. It was great to see that my expectations of the firm's culture were in fact correct.
Yes
Really understand why YOU as the individual want to join TW. TW offers a unique range of practice areas. Highlight why that appeals to you. Also, the firm adopts a strong sector focus and therefore if you have a strong interest in any of the firm's sector, I would recommend placing emphasis on that. Lastly, demonstrate an understanding of how TW separates itself from its competitors within said sector.
