Overview
I help out with tool and project support, helping projects use the publishing tools with the guidance I developed. I have been heavily evolved in the development of publishing tools, including the documentation of guidance. This has allowed me to have freedom and time to develop skills such as documentation writing, inference, and problem solving. I was also involved in developing tools with coding languages. I was able to learn and develop new skills with this task. This placement has given me a lot of freedom to develop skills and tailor what sort of work I would like to do.
Skills
I have learnt many skills in the workplace, with the tasks I had picked up and the extracurricular work I signed up for. With work tasks I developed: Coding through a new coding language Model Based Systems Engineering Technical writing Technical understanding Inference Problem solving With extracurricular work I have developed: Technical writing Technical understanding I have also developed soft skills as a result of this placement, such as: Communication Team work Confidence Independence Integrity
Responsibilities
For the limited time I was on placement I do believe that I was given responsibility and trusted with reasonable tasks and expectations. I communicated openly about my workload, what I could manage and if I was ever confused about what I needed to achieve. I have not been given any high priority work, so I have had time and independence to go through my tasks and think how to complete them to the best of my ability.
Support & Guidance
An incredible amount of support. I was fortunate to have an incredibly helpful and friendly manager who could spare time to talk be through day to day tasks and work specific tasks. I was also fortunate to be in a friendly team that would be willing to explain work and concepts to me without feeling like I was bothering them. My technical coordinators also checked up on me repeatedly and frequently to make sure I had someone to turn to if there were any issues within the team.
Culture
The company seems to value trust and respect, there is a hierarchical structure but I have been able to talk with and discuss a lot with a lot of different levels. It is relaxed and good natured, it values their employees and have amazing benefits such as dynamic working. Within the company, if you have a drive to learn and develop there are many different ways this can be achieved and a lot of people are around to support that development.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement. I had a lovely time in such a friendly team, the whole company is very accepting and friendly. I felt as though I had a lot of support and support networks. I was able to ask my manager for specific work tasks which gave me the freedom for development. There is a large number of grads and undergrads that start within the same cohort, this is incredibly helpful for making friendships and networks, using these bonds to help develop in the work place.
Yes
The best advice I can give is be open and honest, from what I have seen, they value trust and respect above all over attributes. Be honest in what you know, and the type of person you are. I have found that a lot of the software's used in the company are probably new to new employees, so your experience matters more in the sense that you can apply skills you have learnt rather than you are the best at coding in one language.
