Overview
Working as an industrial placement student in a geotechnical engineering team my role mainly consists of report writing for the pre-construction phase of various projects. I've worked on desk studies, ground investigation scopes / specifications and technical notes. I have also had supporting roles during ground investigations including scheduling geotechnical tests and supervision work on site.
Skills
I developed digital skills in excel and GIS (particularly Atlas), and learnt how to write in a consistent formal corporate style for reports. I also developed practical skills including presenting to an audience and how to behave safely on site.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was given tasks which allowed me to contribute to multiple stages of various projects throughout my placement and felt the work I was doing was suitably challenging without being overwhelming. I was typically given space to figure things out by myself using examples but my line manager gave advice whenever I needed it.
Support & Guidance
I was well-supported by my line manager who would make time to give me advice on project work. My 'buddy' was also very supportive and helped me with admin tasks and adjusting to the office environment.
Culture
My team were very welcoming and although there were no other placements students I got on well with the graduates, and often worked with them on projects. As I was based in a fairly small office there were not many social events organised by the company, but I enjoyed the ones that I went to.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it a lot. There were a lot of challenging aspects, especially at the beginning of my placement but overall it was a great experience and I learned a lot.
Yes
Research your sector and learn about what major projects Motts are currently involved with. Being able to discuss the schemes that interested me during my interview was really helpful. There are plenty of presentations and webinars available once you've joined the company and staying up-to-date with these is a great way to follow current developments in the industry.
