Overview
Some days may be in the lab, making antiperspirant aerosol products and using safety knowledge. Other days may be in meetings discussing current projects, limitations and ideas. Lots of opportunity for creativity in the form of storytelling, narratives and demos. Lots of helping other team mates when they are busy and writing claims support for global products.
Skills
Developed existing laboratory skills, including the use of new machinery. Have learnt a lot surrounding safety especially on a high risk site with thousands of aerosols. Have learnt how to be more confident in interacting with people I don't know in the office and how to ask for help from people who are very knowledgeable on things I need to know about. Developed my writing and critical thinking skills - learning to write well constructed pieces for non-scientific audiences.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was solely responsible for an international project and the claims - my team were there to help if I needed it but I was responsible for organising meetings and hosting workshops etc. I was trusted to write the claims support for various projects and to update online dossiers.
Support & Guidance
You definitely need to ask for support in this placement - everyone on my team was extremely busy and support was not given freely. I was assigned a buddy who was helpful for every day lab questions but other support came from asking questions and asking for training etc.
Culture
Everyone was very friendly and helpful - a lot of them are old students so they have a lot of time to give if you want it. The general atmosphere is very welcoming. I hosted two events during my placement to embrace different cultures.
Your Impressions
It was hard as I was writing my dissertation and the support for this was low. The team I was in were always super busy and sometimes I felt left behind/confused. I have made life-long friends with other students here and with some of the other colleagues. Some days were good and some were bad - I'm glad I did it and I would do it again.
