Overview
I am involved in the design and check of Bridge and Civil Structure High Speed 2 assets along our team's Sub-Lot. This involves checking reinforcement shop drawings provided by external manufacturers and liaising with them when things need correcting. I have also been responsible for drafting reports and design certificates for our assets, as well as analysing safety requirements.
Skills
I have greatly developed my analytical skills during my time checking reinforcement shop drawings and associated calculations. I have developed my communication skills as a result of having to contact the contractor and 3rd party manufacturers.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was gradually given more responsibility throughout the year up to the point of which I was responsible for ensuring entire packages of reinforcement shop drawings were checked and corrected.
Support & Guidance
Lots of support. Colleagues were consistently supportive, approachable and friendly.
Culture
Very good. The office was a very comfortable place to be. It helped that there were lots of other placement students and graduates around my age, but there also wasn't a barrier between us and the more senior members of staff so it felt very inclusive.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it a lot and I'm very glad I've taken part in the scheme.
Yes
I'd tell them that it is a brilliant place to work and to begin your career development. They should be open-minded and welcoming of new challenges that they may not have faced yet at university.
