Overview
I have been a member of the Rail Civil and Stations team, assisting the team with all design stages that occur during a rail project (early feasibility, option selection, detailed design and as-builts). This has mainly involved modelling, drawing and report work.
Skills
I have vastly improved my 3D CAD skills and report writing skills which are very different to that at university. I feel my interpersonal skills have also improved by meeting so many new people in the office and through this making new friends. However just the shear amount of knowledge I have been able and tried to absorb from the year has been invaluable. Railways are pretty complex places!
Responsibilities
Working on live projects gave me a big sense of responsibility and at the start it was a little daunting as you don't want to mess the projects up but this was all part of the learning curve.
Support & Guidance
My office buddy and line manager were incredibly supportive, but also the whole Civils and Stations team. There was always someone in the office to ask for help!
Culture
As mentioned previously there was always someone in the office to talk to. Whilst I didn't meet any other industrial placements in the office. I was able to make good friends with the newest graduate cohort who started working in September. The social side of Motts i also enjoyed, with the sports and social team organising frequent socials.
Your Impressions
I have really enjoyed my placement year, it has given me a good taste of what the working world is like. I would recommend a placement year to anyone who wants to do one as it definitely gives you a great insight into the industry you are thinking of moving into, whilst also giving you some great skills, and some good friends along the way.
