Overview
Working with suppliers, negotiating prices, also dealing with real world issues and mitigating against any issues caused by this. Supplier Relationship Management is the main responsibility within the role.
Skills
My confidence has developed significantly, regularly meeting and working with new people, leading discussions and meetings. Time management, meet strict deadlines on projects, often with little warning. Corporate understanding, develop ability to work succesfully within corporate spaces, communicating effectively, correct etiquette etc.
Responsibilities
Yes, a lot of responsibility, often taken full ownership of processes previously ran by managers in order to free up their time. Requesting new opportunities led to creation of new tasks which were completely led by my myself. Always encouraged to act on initiative or using instructions before requesting help.
Support & Guidance
We had the support of a direct line manager who was out of country so only Zoom interaction, however had supervisor at our location who we had weekly calls with however in person interaction was minimal
Culture
Ok, when people are in the office there is opportunity to connect and network, however many colleagues in purchasing work from home a large percentage of the week which meant that sometimes there wasnt much of a community in the office.
Your Impressions
Very much, the first 6-months were very rewarding, however more interaction with colleagues and more opportunities to go offsite and visit suppliers and other plants would have been more enriching than just working from home.
Yes
The process is not as daunting as it may seems and you just need to present yourself as personable and interested in the field you are applying for, they are not too concerned about prior achievements etc.
