Overview
I joined IBM as a member of the IBM Consulting UKI People Operations team, managed by Jo Cunliffe, where I was responsible for organising and running professional new hire inductions (B7 to Band B Partner), coordinating Market PRRs and SRRs, managing the offboarding process for professional employees, supervising contractor IDs and maintaining IBM’s distribution lists. My role provided me with the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills, such as public speaking and organisation. Additionally managing the scheduling of PRRs and SRRs
Skills
Yes I was given a lot of responsibility. Being in a small team meant that we had to take on individual task loads with little people to ask for help. This meant I had to stay very organized and on top of my workload. This was challenging at first, but definitely beneficial in the end as it has definitely prepared me for work after my university degree. A lot of the skills I learnt I will be able to transfer and use through out my career.
Responsibilities
Yes I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement year, learning many skills in a short space of time that I have carried on using throughout my year, which I am sure I will carry on using throughout my career.
Support & Guidance
At IBM there are always people offering support. This is very useful when needed, especially at the start of my placement. However, I believe it is important to not be too reliant on others. Making sure you give everything a go before reaching out for help. This is something I have noticed IBM really embodies and I agree with.
Culture
IBM has a great culture and atmosphere. A huge focus on diversity and inclusion which is great. I believe this is a major factor for their success.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement year. It taught me invaluable skills that I will keep using for the remainder of my career.
Yes
Try and learn as much as possible. Do as much as you can. Make sure you enjoy the work and it is meaningful to you. This way you will get the most out of your year.
