Overview
- Analysing the anti-counterfeit and enforcement side of IP; - Renewing and filing trademarks through the UKIPO; - Drafting C&D letters; - Research and drafting takedown notices for projects within the business; - Administrative support The day-to-day role varies greatly, which is what makes it an exciting role. Some days are solely researching, some days I present my research and discuss the legal implications of a certain action, and other days are purely catching up on administrative tasks.
Skills
- Drafting skills; - Presenting in a large group or to senior lawyers; - Technological support; - Research; - Learning how to approach legal issues from a holistic view, e.g. considering how a particular action may affect the business from a PR perspective; - Communication with people within and outside of my team; - Time management - Project management - Organisational skills.
Responsibilities
I was given much more responsibility than I anticipated, which I loved. At the start, the training was extensive which helped me greatly because I felt comfortable learning the existing structures and frameworks. Once my supervisors learned that I could handle and perform on more advanced projects, I was given a large degree of autonomy. However, I still feel supported because every substantive task is discussed in a collaborative setting and my team is always there if I have questions.
Support & Guidance
My manager met with me every 2 weeks to discuss my personal development, which made me feel very supported, and I received invaluable life and career advice. I felt like the sessions also expanded my soft skills of learning how to communicate in a professional setting and discuss feedback.
Culture
Quite friendly and welcoming. Everyone within the company wants each other to succeed which is a refreshing and unique benefit of the company. Your managers want to encourage you to grow and ask questions. I have felt both supported and challenged, which is the ideal combination.
Your Impressions
I really loved my internship. My team was amazing, and I would want to return as a full-time employee in a heart beat. The work is both technical and creative which means that I always felt intellectually stimulated. I truly enjoyed coming into work every day because of the people and the welcoming culture. I would highly recommend working at the NBCU team.
Yes
I would recommend picking your internship/placement strategically because you truly gain an in-depth insight into the sector/area that you work in, which can truly impact your future career choices.
