Overview
I collate and consolidate financial information from APAC, LATAM and EMEA which I analyse trends and plan ahead. I also make sure that teams are aligned with their budget and are aware of economic impacts. I also look after DreamWorks and have an oversight over the teams Marketing and On Air Promo Tracker. My month-end tasks include completing the DreamWorks pacing to the most accurate view. I also have more commercial tasks such as creating a bi-weekly newsletter collating information on what has been happening in the industry. And also a competitor dashboard in which I read into the Big Six financial statements and create a presentation every quarter.
Skills
I've developed my Communication Skills through having weekly/monthly catch-ups with teams from around the world. Communicating through Teams is different than face to face so learning and exploring ways to communicate better and effectively is something I've learnt. I've also developed my Analysis Skills through learning what to look in to and taking into consideration external impacts that could affect the media industry, especially Direct to Consumer. I've also developed my Quantitative Skills through viewing different ways different departments calculate their revenue and operating cash flow. The P&L is something I work on daily. My Technical Skills is something I have learnt on the job through Financial Systems such as BPC and SAP.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement. I look after different P&L lines for DreamWorks and track revenue for the whole of Direct To Consumer. The team have also given me freedom to explore other tasks and take on more responsibility in which I was interested in. I work very independently and focus on my tasks in which I know have an affect on the whole business. Especially month-end deadlines and pacing's, I am responsible for leading conversations about changes in cost and future financial impacts.
Support & Guidance
I was given support via the people in my team such as my manager and others working in my department. There was an environment in which I was able to ask any and every question at any moment. I also had 1-2-1's with my manager weekly in which I was able to voice any problems or questions that had arisen at that time and have an allotted space in which these are focused on.
Culture
The company culture and general atmosphere is really great with the communication team creating events surrounding every event such as Halloween, Christmas etc. We also have a relaxed environment and everyone in the company are open to chat and grab a coffee which is great for Networking within the industry. There are also a range of career events that can are beneficial for interns especially ERGs such as the Women's Network which has been really insightful for me this year.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement thoroughly. The work to life balance is great and the amount of responsibility given is manageable yet challenging enough for an intern. I feel integrated within the team and have the opportunities that any other full time member of the team would have. I've been exposed to meetings with the Senior Vice President and the President of Direct to Consumer which have been insightful and exciting to be a part of.
Yes
The company environment is great and the fun opportunities available such as premieres and screenings are a perk. The workload can be challenging but it teaches you how to manage your time well and you get chucked into the life of work with no pressure from your team. Networking within the company is also great with everyone being kind and open to having conversations with you. If you want an insight not only from the perspective of an intern but be able to sit into conversations with the SVP and President of your department, NBCUniversal is a great place to give you this exposure.
