Overview
I have had a variety of roles in the bridges team at Mott MacDonald. The main two have been trainee bridge designer and assurance coordinator. As a trainee bridge designer, I have had the opportunity to check bridge elements and assist in the design of repair works for existing bridges. This has involved producing calculations and sketches, and also using software. As an assurance coordinator, I worked alongside an assurance lead and regularly coordinated with design teams to produce and deliver key assurance documents in HS2.
Skills
Throughout the placement, I have developed my: - interpersonal skills - software skills (Excel, MIDAS, Profis - project specific) - sketching skills.
Responsibilities
Responsibility varied project by project. As an assurance coordinator, I was supported well but had more individual responsibility of producing documents and coordinating with designers. As a trainee bridge designer, I was supported well in my design checks and calculations.
Support & Guidance
I received a great amount of support and guidance during my internship for project specific problems as well as general internship queries, the whole team have been very helpful throughout.
Culture
I have had a good experience - the working environment has been good and the team have been very welcoming.
Your Impressions
I have really enjoyed my overall experience working in the bridges team at Mott MacDonald. I enjoyed integrating into the team, and the roles have provided me with a good insight into a career in civil engineering, as well as the nature of an office job.
