  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Conducting VAT calculations and compliance procedures. Responsibilities include driving accurate VAT calculations, performing month-end procedures including general ledger close checks and Blackline reconciliations, and executing administrative tasks to support seamless communication. Key duties also involve diverse projects such as VAT determinations with Irish hotels and support for hotel refurbishment projects, fostering effective financial operations, and showcasing resilience in addressing complex challenges. Proactively support financial operations by setting up and monitoring projects for UK-managed and owned hotels.

  • Throughout my tenure, I've significantly expanded my skill set, both by acquiring new competencies and refining existing ones. Notably, I've gained proficiency in advanced financial analysis, project management, and regulatory compliance. Moreover, my technical capabilities have grown substantially through mastering new Excel shortcuts, formulas, and macros, enhancing efficiency and precision in data management. Furthermore, I've honed soft skills such as communication, collaboration, resilience, problem-solving, and professionalism, all of which are integral to thriving in dynamic work environments.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • During my placement at Hilton, there was a concerted effort to provide interns with significant responsibility akin to that of full-time employees. I actively led tasks within my teams and had the opportunity to spearhead various projects, which entailed a substantial level of responsibility. However, it was also important to maintain a balance, ensuring that interns were not overwhelmed with tasks. This approach allowed for ample time to participate in engaging events organized for the office or specifically for interns.

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Throughout my placement, I received extensive support and guidance from my colleagues and supervisors. From day one, there was a clear emphasis on providing the necessary resources and assistance to help me succeed in my role. My line manager made sure I had a platform to address any challenges or questions by having regular check-ins. Additionally Hilton have a intern program lead, who is always there to help no matter what the situation. This supportive atmosphere greatly contributed to my professional growth and development during my time at Hilton.

  • The company culture at Hilton was vibrant and inclusive, there was a sense of community and collaboration among employees. There was a strong emphasis on teamwork and mutual support, with colleagues readily offering assistance and sharing knowledge. It's really opened my eyes to how friendly the workplace can be. Not only dynamic and energetic but a focus on innovation and continuous improvement. Additionally, Hilton placed a high value on employee well-being, offering various initiatives and resources to promote work-life balance and personal development. Overall, the company culture contributed to a positive and fulfilling work environment.

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at Hilton, as it provided me with a wealth of fulfilling experiences. The supportive environment, engaging projects, and collaborative culture made each day meaningful and enjoyable. The positive impact that it's had on my professionalism is something that I'm sure will stay with me. The opportunity to travel for work, particularly to Glasgow, added an exciting dimension to my experience, allowing me to broaden my professional horizons and explore new places. Additionally, outside of work, participating in the Go Hilton team member program further enhanced my enjoyment, enabling Hilton's team members to experience the company's properties, providing me with memorable opportunities to travel and create lasting memories. Overall, my placement at Hilton was an enriching journey that I cherished immensely.
