Overview
My role day-to-day depends on the project I'm working on. We have team meetings 4x a week to give any updates or any unlocks that are needed. There is a lot of Excel in my role so dealing with data on spreadsheets. I've also worked on some exciting projects where I've created decks and presented to members of the HR community.
Skills
Yes! I've picked up a lot of Excel & PowerPoint skills, I've also become a lot more confident in presenting to large audiences. Data crunching is a huge part of my role. Prioritising is key when schedules get busy and this is something I've managed with guidance from my line manager. I've also had the opportunity to run social events at our 100VE office, which has included budgeting, organising & managing.
Responsibilities
A lot more than I expected! I'm super grateful to have been treated not like an intern but on the same level as my team members. I have been able to speak to important members of the HR community and help on important projects for the HR Leadership Team. My manager gave me my own tasks to 'own' so I've been able to see progress start to finish.
Support & Guidance
I'm super grateful to have had a supportive team and line manager who I have weekly catchups with and meetings together at least 3/4 days a week. I have felt very psychologically safe and when I need help I don't feel afraid to ask.
Culture
Unilever has a great company culture. They care about your psych safety, health & capacity. Sometimes it doesn't even feel like a job because I get to see my friends everyday and haven't come across hardly any unpleasant people. It is very easy to reach out to colleagues when you have a Q & they'll happily help. There is also a fab social committee which run events throughout the year.
Your Impressions
I have really enjoyed my placement, there are so many transferable skills I've picked up and I have grown more confident in myself. It has prepared me for the working world and I highly recommend a placement year!
Yes
Think of all the reasons you want to apply to Unilever in particular & what skills you need for your role. They know it may be your first job so you don't need pages of previous experience. It's all about being willing to learn!
