Overview
Running various reports and combining these to ensure values are matching as expected. Collating data each month for payments such as: Pension payments, Court order payments, 3rd Party payments - combining the information, checking, then sending off for approval and payment. Posting monthly journals, reconciliations and the GL (General Ledger). Analysing data sets and presenting this information in clearer ways (pivots, tables, graphs). Adhering to monthly financial deadlines along with internal payroll deadlines.
Skills
My excel skills have seriously developed! I have learned so many formulas and shortcuts that I will use in the rest of my career. Payroll is quite a specific department so I have gained a lot of knowledge about this subject that I didn't previously have. Generic people skills and learning how to work/ behave in a corporate environment is also something that has been so beneficial. I have gained so much confidence.
Responsibilities
In my first week I was given my own project to work on, which felt great to have this responsibility so early on - being able to showcase some of my skills acquired from university and present this to the director of my team. Once I was taught specific daily tasks, these then became my responsibility to ensure these were completed on time each day. Overall yes, a good amount but not overwhelming
Support & Guidance
My manager set up a training plan and we reviewed this monthly to ensure I was hitting targets that we set. Everyone also checked in on me regularly to make sure I was feeling comfortable with the workload and settling in okay. I also got accepted for getting a mentor, which is such an invaluable experience for networking with senior employees from all over the world. I also had a "buddy" in my team
Culture
Hilton well and truly deserves the title of Best Workplace in the World! I have never worked for such an appreciative company - your hard work really doesn't go unmissed, you are celebrated for your achievements and pushed to be the best version of yourself. The office has a great atmosphere, everyone is friendly and happy to help if you have any questions about anything.
Your Impressions
I have absolutely adored my placement. So much that I have chosen to extend for an additional 2 months over summer. My team is made up from the greatest people I think I will ever work with. The experience I have gained and networks I have created will be so beneficial for my future. The great city location of the office always provides for great after work entertainment.
Yes
Be your authentic self! As much as they are interested in your background, they are looking to see who you are as a person and how you would fit within the team. Prepare for interviews by researching the business and related items that interest you. There are lots of rounds to the application process but remain positive and keep pushing through. Easier said than done but have confidence in yourself
