Overview
Majority of my role was project based so no two days looked the same, but a large majority of my role was working and networking with media via Hilton's Press Office which involved facilitating media stays, influencer stays, information enquiries etc. I was heavily involved in internal and executive comms, which involved planning and executing video production, memos, events and briefing executives for external speaking opportunities. I also helped the team with admin support wherever needed.
Skills
I've learned many skills throughout my year with Hilton, for example my tech skills have improved, i've learned how to communicate and operate within a corporate environment, and i've learnt about the nuances of effective communications. A big skill i've developed though, has been my team work skills. Within my team there were a number of sub teams that I worked across, so learning to coordinate with those teams was a huge learning point for me.
Responsibilities
I would say I was given a lot of responsibility, and that's how I've learned best. My team trusted me to connect with hotels, media and colleagues to execute my role. I would say the team didn't "baby" me at any point, and I was entrusted with a lost of responsibility and whilst there was guidance throughout, they never felt the need to watch my every move or question my actioning and I think that's helped my confidence and my learning hugely.
Support & Guidance
My manager ensured we had weekly touch points at the minimum - every week we spent half an hour going through my work for that week, any questions, concerns, and it also provided a platform for me to address any personal or professional concerns I had. Beyond my manager directly, the team as a whole were so incredibly supportive and encouraging, and I never felt my questions to anyone were a burden or an issue, and this has increased my confidence hugely.
Culture
Incredible. Going into this placement was quite daunting as it was my first corporate position and it was with a huge global powerhouse company so I was worried there would be an impersonal approach or a bad company culture. This couldn't have been further from the truth. I've never heard of a company culture as positive as Hilton. The support they provide for their Team Members both in hotels and offices is incredible, and their values are amazing too e.g. their work for DEI, ESG etc.
Your Impressions
I cannot put into words how much I have enjoyed this year! It was the best thing I could have done both for my professional and personal development. I've met some incredible people and i'd recommend it to anyone!
Yes
Your team will want to provide you with a lot of opportunities and you should say yes to every single one! Putting yourself out there and throwing yourself into things is how i've learned the most and i've enjoyed every moment.
