    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I am responsible for supporting our graduates' experience from their induction to thier progression. This includes: preparing inputs and reporting on our key metrics, data analysis, and making sure that they are compliant with business requirements. I support all the functions of my team too including Engagement, Attraction, Recruitment and Onboarding, understanding the whole fresher to IBMer journey.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, technical curiosity is a key trait within IBMers so I have definitely become more open minded towards that. We are surrounded by AI in all of our conversations, so completing mandatory on that has allowed me to stay relevant in the changing landscape. Soft Skills have also been something that I was constantly developing: commercial awareness, collaboration, confidence and teamworking.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, we were given a lot of responsibility, and early on. Most of my team worked part time, so there was a level of expectation that sometimes we would have to make decisions on behalf of them to make sure that everything was delivered as promised. We were also allowed to work on other projects outside our role, which for me had more responsibility.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Every intern has two managers, a foundation (for pastoral care/reviews/wellbeing/admin etc) and a task manager for your day job. Outside of this, interns are encouraged to get shadowing work or mentors in other areas of the business that interests them. Also I had the graduate team of 11 managers and the community to lean on.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?
  • 5/5

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • There is a certain 'buzz' when you walk into the office. Even on our 'strict' Consulting floor, there is always someone laughing or smiling. It was a very open, warm, inviting place to work in an office that gave so many opportunities for collaboration and innovation to strike.

  • How would you rate the inclusiveness of the culture?

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed the experience that it gave me and the skills it allowed me to develop. I have made some wonderful friends who I will cherish the memories of. The role wasn't exactly what I had hoped for, or where I see myself in the future developing in to, but it has helped me learn where my strengths lie and what I am good at.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
  • Research!!! Make sure that you know the industry, and key technological advancements that IBM are working on or have worked on. Commercial awareness is extremely important. Making sure that you look at the growth behaviours and values to make sure that you align with them. I also think that genuine passion and a thirst for knowledge is extremely important to showcase.
