Overview
In my role my responsibilities include assisting IBM Consulting UKI practitioners, this involves working and communicating with a wide range of key stakeholders; including Executives, HR, Finance, Recruitment, Talent Acquisition Partners, Onboarding Support Partners. There is a great deal of interaction with the business both client facing and internal employees. Myself and my team manage the IBM Consulting UKI monthly Inductions to an exceptionally high standard welcoming new IBMers into the business. The Induction process involves a variety of actions that ensure a smooth welcome into IBM. These activities can vary but involve pre Induction communications and checks as required through to the management of the induction which can be either virtual or face-to-face. I manage a variety of tasks including New Hire Induction/On-Boarding (act as ambassador for IBM when welcoming New Hires into IBM and help prepare them for client site) and Business Organisation and Distribution Lists management.
Skills
I have developed my Excel skills through online courses that were made available. Additionally I also was able to strenghten my presentation skills as these were regularly utlised whilst working on various projects. Through collaborating with my team my communication skills evolved and I was able to effectively work alongside them and stick to our monthly role rotation.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement within my role. However due to being within such a large organisation I was also able to take time away from my role and explore the business offerings. Through networking and finding sectors I was interested in I was able to jump on projects with different types of client work. This meant I got exposure elsewhere whilst also maintaining the standard of work for my core role.
Support & Guidance
Through having two line managers I received a lot of support. Additionally people within the business were kind and wanted you to succeed. I was able to network with people who has been at IBM their entire careers and also people who had just jumped on the graduate scheme so I was able to get a lot of different advice.
Culture
The company culture was one of my favourite things about being at IBM. There are a lot of communities for all different types of people with regular meetings and events. This was a great way for me to meet likeminded individuals. It also helped that within consulting there are regular townhalls and socials so people can network and expand their reach. It is apparent people want you to succeed so are very naturally helpful.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement, from the people I met to the skills and learning I have developed. It has definately opened my eyes up to the corporate world and I have found something I am interested in which I was unaware of before. This has also helped with my career progression and skills building massively.
Yes
Network, Network, Network. Meet as many people within IBM as you can and try and stand out. It is a really friendly and inclusive environment so make the most of it!
