Overview
I worked within the Global Digital Commerce Supply Chain function. This role involved supporting/advising local markets with their Digital Supply Chain initiatives and pureplay customer issues. I project/product managed 2 major projects & acted as a subject-matter expert writing briefings on the future of digital commerce for the CEO and Leadership Executive.
Skills
Throughout my time at Unilever I acquired industry-basic skills like Excel [data analysis & validation] & Presenting/Storytelling. However, due to the nature of my role I acquire significant and in-demand skills like: Project/Product Management, Stakeholder Management, Cross-Functional Leadership, E-Commerce, KPI Monitoring/Investigation, Root Cause Analysis, Change Management and Multinational Teamworking to name but a few!
Responsibilities
From day 1, I was given full ownership of relationships with key markets globally on significant projects. I was responsible for all stakeholder engagement, education, action follow up, and closure. Additionally, I was tasked with updating the Vice President of my team weekly on the progress of my projects - this is a rare chance within Unilever.
Support & Guidance
Support and guidance was significant and I received mentorship from senior team members. However, it is the responsibility of the intern to demonstrate ability and interest as well as to network to acquire contacts and supporters. My mentors ensured that I was stretched to achieve sizeable targets & from this I learnt a lot.
Culture
Unilever is a hugely supportive, collaborative, and relaxed environment where you are safe to fail and try out new ideas. My team in particular had a real entrepreneurial spirit, so we were always trying out new ideas, building new partnerships, and executing impactful initiatives. Again, huge emphasis is placed on personal and professional development.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the placement. I can honestly say that coming to the end of the role, I can clearly see how far I have developed. I also have a much clearer idea of what I enjoy and where my passions lie. I've also come to realise the importance of professional relationships and networking! People really do make the world go round!
Yes
Know the company and identify where your purpose aligns with it's mission. Are you passionate about sustainability? Do you get energised by collaborating with others? or do you take satisfaction from owning your own initiatives? All of these things are offered by Unilever, its key that you work out your USP and go from there.
