Skills
Project Management Communication Confidence in approaching new people
Responsibilities
In both of my placements after the initial learning period I have been treated as a normal member of the team. I wouldn't say I've ever been "looked down" upon as an intern and have been entrusted with some meaningful projects.
Support & Guidance
Support and guidance hasn't been very forthcoming but has always been available when asked for. I've needed to be proactive in finding opportunities for growth during my placements.
Culture
The company culture is good, there is never a great deal of pressure put on you to deliver. There is no real sense of hierarchy within the company which is very refreshing. All managers are very approachable and willing to give you a hand when they have the time. Only negative has been that sometimes it feels like teams are trying to push responsibilities away and pull in different directions compared to other teams. No real sense of being one company from time to time.
Your Impressions
I have enjoyed my placement thoroughly and have definitely taken a lot away from it. I can tell myself as someone who perhaps isn't the most self aware that I have grown a lot as a person during the year through my experiences in the placement. I did not get the opportunity to have any say in the placements I completed. I believe I would've enjoyed the placement more if I had a say in this before starting.
Yes
-Build your application around the company values and the Airbus Leadership model. -Try and gain as much industry experience as possible while at university and before applying for year long placements. The first experience may be in a small local engineering company but this is still valuable experience. Don't be "snobby" about it. This helped me a great deal. -Prepare for the interview!! Do a lot of company research and about what the plant you're applying to does. This will really set you apart (I received direct feedback this is the key reason I got chosen).
